Business Insights: Remember Those About to Retire

What strange and unusual times these are.

Our client base (school employees) have been home for many months. Their world, as for all of us, has been flipped upside down as to how to go about doing their respective jobs with any sense of normalcy. Schools are grappling with reduced budgets and trying to get a handle on virtual learning. Many school employees have been looking at being permanently laid off or contending with teachers who say, “if we are virtual learning, I’m not going back.” Many of these employees are eligible for retirement but were not considering it before COVID-19. The number nationally has to literally be thousands.

We were asked by an association we work with if we could help this group. We produced a virtual seminar that was built to provide school employees who were not coming back to work this August with the valuable information and help on working with the state regarding immediate retirement.

As you can imagine, time was of the essence; the association gave us two weeks to be ready. They sent out this information to the local districts and 459 people signed up. During the 45-minute seminar, we convened some of our best people in a room to serve as a panel and answered 55 questions about the retirement system and its benefits. Since then, we have heard from districts and employees that it was a big help to many that are being faced with the uncertainty of having to retire immediately.
