Compliance Is King in NTSA Net 2022 Top 10

There was plenty of activity in 2022 affecting plans, participants, employers, and service providers, and NTSA Net was there. But the year that was also provided copious reminders that content that provides nuts-and-bolts information is critically important.

The top 10 posts on NTSA Net in 2022 make it abundantly clear that service providers, plan administrators and retirement plan professionals are interested in access to information that helps them comply with the letter and spirit of laws and the regulations that apply them. That compliance, of course, is critical not only for one’s practice but also to well serve clients and those who, in turn, rely on them.

The top 10 most-viewed posts on NTSA Net in 2022 originated not only from news coverage, but also from resources available on NTSA Net that provide such practical content and information. And even the news stories that are among the 10 most-viewed posts centered around compliance and information that makes it possible.
Among the news stories written and posted in 2022, the third most read was:

IRS Announces 2023 Benefit, Contribution Limits

In late October — as is the IRS’ practice for the last 20 years or so — the agency announced cost-of-living adjustments affecting dollar limitations for pension and other retirement plans and other retirement-related items for tax year 2023.

The second most-read news story of 2022 was:

Final SECURE 2.0 Included in Year-End Spending Bill

While most were nestled all snug in their beds in the waning hours of Dec. 19, House and Senate leaders released the text of a mammoth “omnibus” spending bill. That legislation included the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022, a measure that includes a variety of provisions affecting retirement plans, including those with which NTSA is concerned.

And the most-read news story was an analysis by Maria Hurd explaining and illustrating how the 403(b) special 15-year catch-up contribution works:

How Does the 403(b) Special 15-Year Catch-Up Contribution Work?

Where have you worked, for how long, and how much you have contributed to a 403(b) plan are all the questions that make up the puzzle pieces necessary to compute each participant’s available 403(b) catch-up.

The sixth most read post was from both the NTSA Advisor and the ERISA Tips column that appeared in the NTSA Advisor:

ERISA Tips: ERISA vs. Non-ERISA Plans

The post discusses the difference between an ERISA and non-ERISA plan, and arises from the article “Impact of 408(b)(2) Guide on 403(b) Advisors,” by Kimberly Flett and Jeannine Souders, which originally ran in the NTSA Advisor on Sept. 23, 2014.

Rounding out the top 10 are posts from the Tech Talk feature on NTSA Net, a resource that provides technical information useful in running a plan and a practice and staying in compliance while doing so. These included:

403(b) Plans and Minister’s Housing Allowances

403(b) Withdrawals to Pay for Higher Education

Income Tax Withholding on RMDs

Making a Charitable Donation with a 403(b) RMD

And far and away, the most read post of 2022 — with twice as many readers as the post at number 2 — was:

The Difference Between 403(b) and 403(b)(7) Plans

This post has staying power! It was posted in 2018 and is a perennial top post among the most read.

Will it still be among the most-read posts in 2023? We’ll see! In the meantime, happy new year!
