Permitted Investments in 403(b) Plans

Investment options are generally more limited for 403(b) plans than they are for other qualified retirement plans, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) points out.

Amounts contributed into 403(b) accounts may only be invested in annuity contracts; 403(b) plan assets invested in annuity contracts may be invested in fixed or variable annuities. Assets of 403(b) plans also may be invested in custodial accounts.

Thus, investments in individual stocks and bonds, bank savings accounts, individual treasury notes or bills, or similar types of investments traditionally available under employer-sponsored retirement plans are not permitted for 403(b) accounts.
