Coming Soon Online: California State Pension Data

The California Controller’s office soon will make information about the state’s approximately 130 public pension systems available on a new website. California Controller John Chiang on Sept. 8 unveiled the site, which provides a wide range of data on city and county finances.

The new site currently provides information on county and city revenues, expenditures, liabilities, assets and fund balances. It uses an “open data” format that allows information to be viewed, downloaded, converted into charts and shared. It will be updated annually.
The site does not provide data on California public pension plans, but the controller’s office says that it will later the fall. This will include data concerning:
* assets
* liabilities
* additions to plan assets
* employer contributions
* employee contributions
* deductions from plan assets
* benefits payments
* administrative expenses
* statistics on the number of active, inactive and retired members
* net return on investments
* actuarial funding
It is possible that the system may be modified further; the controller’s office plans to make revisions later this fall based on user feedback.
