Alaska Bill Would Expand Teachers’ Retirement Choices

A bill is before the Alaska House of Representatives that would expand options for some participants in the state teachers’ retirement system.

HB 220, introduced by Rep. Grier Hopkins (D-Goldstream), includes provisions that would give teachers in Alaska the ability to choose between the defined benefit and defined contribution plans of the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Alaska and the teachers’ retirement system.

In a press release, Hopkins argues that the proposal would “maximize taxpayer’s return on investment in our public employees,” create “a cost-neutral pension system that shares investment risk between the state and her employees,” and give teachers “the chance to earn a retirement with dignity.”

HB 220 has been referred to the House Rules Committee.
