Q. What are some documents that are especially to retain?
A. It could be especially helpful to keep the following documents:
- summary plan description (SPD);
- summary of material modifications (SMM);
- materials related to corporate actions, such as meeting minutes, agendas and handouts;
- service agreements;
- fidelity bonds; and
- fee disclosures.
Why? They are helpful in administering a plan and serving participants; in addition, the IRS and Department of Labor may want to see them if they audit or examine the plan.
