Documents to Save

Q. What are some documents that are especially to retain?

A. It could be especially helpful to keep the following documents:

  • summary plan description (SPD);
  • summary of material modifications (SMM);
  • materials related to corporate actions, such as meeting minutes, agendas and handouts;
  • service agreements;
  • fidelity bonds; and
  • fee disclosures.

Why? They are helpful in administering a plan and serving participants; in addition, the IRS and Department of Labor may want to see them if they audit or examine the plan.
