Q. What are some factors beyond what to contribute to a retirement account that a participant should consider?
A. Deciding how much to contribute to one’s retirement account is, of course, central to retirement saving. But in the RetireReady blog, Edward Dressel suggests that there are additional factors and amounts that a plan participant should consider. These include:
- what they would need to save if they retired a year later;
- what additional assets would they need if they had an old 401(k) or IRA;
- whether they expect to inherit money; and
- how much additional money they might need when they retire.
